For 35 years, The Carpetbag Theatre, Inc. (CBT) has produced new work from the stories of disenfranchised communities across the region. Its approach is collective, growing out of years of training in ensemble technique and cultural organizing. CBT has produced work that is issue-driven or historically-based, and rooted in the culture of African Diaspora. The communities that it serves are diverse and complex. The professional Ensemble Company conducts national residencies, promoting community story gathering and cultural empowerment. Its artists are rooted in the idea and practice of community-building through the arts.

The Carpetbag Theatre produces performance events that significantly enhance its program initiatives. We work with all disciplines and forms. Our audience consists of African American, European American, and Latino social activists and community service workers. They are intergenerational and include adult learners and those who are differently-abled.
